This set was hard to narrow down: from almost 700 photos, I’ve chosen 60.
These were chosen based on how fully they restored the feeling of having been in Rio to take them, and I hope you get at least some idea of the place. I enjoy taking photographs but only feel they succeed when they capture both the image and the essence of a place. Photography is noble for this aim. For this reason and others I admire photographers, and envy their knowledge.
It was my great fortune to have had multiple hosts in Rio: a good friend who speaks fluent Portuguese and had lived and studied in Brazil; a friendly, generous family who lodged me and my pal for a week, and fed us, and encouraged my crude attempts at their language with patient repetition and bright laughter; young men and women who showed off their city with pride, and introduced me to what otherwise would have been hidden; even a slightly-drunken motorman who saved me from likely disaster.
These people and others made these photographs possible. They made adventures, explorations, mishaps and discoveries of Rio possible. These photos are a glimpse at that experience.
